Most building departments require an asbestos survey before issuing permits for demolition or significant remodeling involving the removal of sheet rock, flooring, and other potential asbestos abatement materials. asbestos survey is intended to determine whether construction or the number of samples taken in an asbestos survey will be sufficient to identify asbestos-containing materials if any, and quantify the approximate amount and location of such materials in preparation for asbestos abatement and or demolition of the structure in accordance with the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) section.
In addition to the obvious health concerns, if a building is partially or completely demolished without an asbestos survey, the presumption is that there was asbestos present, and all demolition debris is required to be asbestos and disposed of in an asbestos approved.
When an asbestos containing materials are identified in an asbestos survey, they can be removed and disposed of appropriately by an asbestos abatement company, and the balance of the material can be disposed of in.
